On Christmas day Tiombé participated in the You Belong annual Christmas sharing event with several members of her church, New Home Baptist Church. The event was largely organized by Taquila Jones, also a member of New Home, and head of their fitness ministry. Members of the church gathered donations of clothing items as well as toiletries and hygiene products so they could be packaged into individual gift bags for both men and women. Tiombé donated clothing and shoes herself, gathered additional donations from family and friends, and solicited a donation from her dentist of toothbrushes and toothpaste so that every gift bag had dental care items. The church members then drove to different parks in Washington, DC where many homeless people live and handed out dozens of bags and clothing. Although there are many homeless women living on the streets, there were a larger number of men present that day and the male gift bags went quickly. The leftover bags for women were delivered to the House of Ruth, a center in Washington, DC that provides housing, daycare, counseling and other supportive services to women and their children who are homeless and/or survivors of domestic violence. Tiombé said “I feel so happy to have participated today. I have been saying for a while now that I wanted to volunteer my time and go to a local food center and help serve meals to the homeless. I still plan on doing that but today was really special because we had a lot of support from people who donated their belongings as well as their time in an effort to make Christmas a special day for those who are less fortunate right now. Meeting them today and hearing their different stories of survival was very emotional and also very rewarding for me. It was a cold day with snow on the ground and it’s tough to swallow that they have to deal with this every day. But I think we brought some joy to a lot of people and I didn’t mind giving up a few hours of my time on Christmas day to help out. I plan on doing this every year.”
