On November 13th Tiombé participated in the Muscular Distrophy Associationtm (MDA) eighth annual Heartsongs Gala held at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, DC. The MDA is a national voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through worldwide research, comprehensive services, and professional and public health education. As a muscle team member, she was partnered with a young man with muscular dystrophy as a part of the Make a Muscle, Make a Difference national fundraising campaign and encouraged people to support the efforts of the MDA. The event was a tribute to Mattie J. T. Stepanek, best-selling poet and peacemaker, who died in 2004 from a rare form of muscular dystrophy. Mattie was MDA’s National Goodwill Ambassador. His mother Jeni is MDA’s national vice president and was the keynote speaker for the event. Silent and live auctions during the course of the evening included various donated sports memorabilia from local professional athletes, services from local businesses, and much more. The MDA’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors and local businesses and fundraising.
